It is sometimes difficult to get a good feel for what the swing plane should be when making a full speed swing. Although stopping to check certain positions can disrupt the flow of your swing, it is often helpful in developing a complete swing image and feel. So let's discuss some important areas to focus on while practicing.
Step 1:
Swing the club back until it is directly parallel to your toe line (target line). At this stage, the top of the shaft (grip end) and the club head should be parallel to the ground or at the same level. Also, the leading edge of the clubhead will point to the sky or parallel to your toe line.
Step 2: The shaft begins to hinge upwards in between the forearms and through the right shoulder.

Step 3: The club points to the intended target, shaft parallel to the ground, left arm is across the chest, covering the right shoulder.
Step 4: Downswing: The shaft will split the right bicep (a little lower than the backswing). A line extended off the shaft will point directly at the ball.

I do not advise that you think of these positions while hitting a shot. Do it as a rehearsal prior to your actual swing. Do it slowly and use a mirror to help guide you when possible. Ask one of the instructors at the Del Mar Golf Center for more information.
