In order to hit a ball properly you need to take a divot after the ball is struck.

Unfortunately too many people are trying to achieve this without a proper swing. Beginners should work on your fundamentals (grip, stance, posture, etc.) before attempting this concept.
Most golfers move their head and shoulders down towards the ground, tilting their spine forward to try to hit down on the ball. This in turn makes the wrist-hinge release early and makes it impossible to achieve the desired result.

When the wrists release early you scoop through impact bending your left arm, which results in high shots, slices and pulls. "Fat Shots" and "Thin Shots" result from this same mistake. |
The proper way to hit down on the ball is to keep your head behind the center of your feet and use the wrist hinge in the following sequence.
Achiving this sequence is very difficult and requires a good backswing and swingplane. Focus on keeping your head behind the ball through impact and your spine tilted away from the target.
