Putting Tips - November 2008

We have all heard the phrase, "Drive for Show and putt for Dough", but do we really believe it?

Many golfers believe that the quickest way to shave strokes off their score, is to add ten more yards to their drive, so they invest hundreds of dollars in a new driver. If you move every one of your tee shots up ten yards in the fairway, you will shoot the exact same scores. The real scoring happens on or around the greens. Every time you take more than two putts on a green, you have just wasted at least one shot. Ask yourself how many times during a round does that happen. For many golfers, it happens multiple times per round. There are no reasons a person can't learn to putt well. It requires no size or strength, and doesn't matter whether you are a man, woman, or child. The putting motion is the simplest motion in golf. The key to putting well, is proper fundamentals.

Let's review our putting fundamentals:

1.      Stand tall with feet about shoulder width, and bend forward from the waist so that your  eyes are over the ball.
2.      Have your feet, knees, hips, shoulders, and forearms parallel to the target line.
3.      Your stroke should be a blend of  swinging  the putter back and through with the shoulders and arms, while keeping the lower body and head still.
4.      The putter should move back and through the same distance.

If you are having trouble with your putting, set up a lesson with one of our Professionals. That one lesson may save you five or six shots a round.
